Think you know the West? Think again.
After their success at the Féile an Phobail 2009 with Two Roads West, Belfast theatre company Kabosh are back with their latest production The West Awakes.
Kabosh and Fáilte Feirste Thiar have teamed up with the existing Coiste and TaxiTrax tours to bring to life the rich history and vibrant heritage of this unique area of the city of Belfast, enhancing these already hugely popular tours of West Belfast.
Starring Gerard Jordan and Antoinette Morelli, directed by Paula McFetridge, The West Awakes features five new dramas by Kieron Magee, Jimmy McAleavey, Laurence McKeown and Roseleen Walsh, performed at St. Comgall’s School, Conway Street, Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich, City Cemetery and Milltown Cemetery.

Playwrights
Jimmy McAleavey
Jimmy McAleavey is from Belfast and was educated there and at Oxford University. He has written numerous radio plays – for BBC Radio 4, Radio 3 and RTE – and has scripted drama for television and film. He has been the recipient of an arts council individual artist grant and has been shortlisted for long list of awards.
The Sign of the Whale was his first full-scale production which was produced by Tinderbox Theatre Company, following a studio production of The Virgin Father and a rehearsed reading of Weirdwolf. He plans to continue writing stage plays and to develop his craft.
Laurence McKeown
Laurence was a former Irish republican prisoner. Upon his release from the Long Kesh/Maze prison, Laurence completed a doctoral study at Queen’s University. His thesis entitled Unrepentant Fenian Bastards: the social construction of an Irish Republican Prisoner Community looking at the political and organisational development of republicans imprisoned in Long Kesh 1972-1998 was later published, entitled Out of Time (2001) . Laurence co-wrote a feature film about the hunger strike, H3 with former prisoner Brian Campbell. He has also written/co-written several plays staged by Dubblejoint including A Cold House, The Laughter of Our Children and The Official Version.
Kieron Magee
Kieron Magge is a West Belfast writer. Kieron studied Irish history at Queen’s university, and most of his works are Irish history related. He has been working as a writer in West Belfast, and has worked within various communities staging dramas in past Feile festivals.
Rosaleen Walsh
Roseleen Walsh is a writer from West Belfast. She began writing poetry at the age of nine, and progressed from poetry to plays. Roseleen set up Commedagh Productions in 2006, consisting of professional, amateur and student actors, with Roseleen in the role as playwright.
